The Rage in Placid Lake

The Rage in Placid Lake I really wanted to like this film a lot more than I did.  Actually, I wanted to love it.  Not because a dear friend lent it to me with words of high praise, and not because it had the admirable Garry McDonald in it, and not because it was an independent quirky art-house film – these are all the reasons that led me to add it to my ‘must see’ list.

Well, as expected, I did see it, and it had such truly loveable eccentric characters, and a goofy, gently subversive plot,  and clever, idiosyncratic lines.  The very things that would usually set me singing praises, and yet… there was something about the energy of the film that felt flat.  I think it may have needed some rage.  I did like it, but I was disappointed that I didn’t love it.
